On the afternoon of September 28, 2024, at the Hangzhou Convention and Exhibition Center, as part of the 3rd Global Digital Trade Expo, the 2024 AI International Piano Competition finals came to a complete success with warm applause.
At the invitation of the event organizer, artistic director Professor Zhou Keng, and chairman of the competition jury, Professor Zhu Mei of the Piano Department of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, pianist/composer and president of the US-China Cultural and Art Exchange Association Dong Rongcan participated in the intense preparations as the only observer and commentator of the event, and felt the cordial, friendly and cooperative atmosphere of the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music's Piano Department team.
Before the game, as one of the important guests, Dong Rongcan participated in a meeting with Lu Shan, Vice Governor of Zhejiang Province.
This AI International Piano Competition is a landmark international event that breaks tradition: 1. Combining high technology, international players' performances from all over the world are transmitted to the piano at the competition site in real time through MIDI signals, allowing the audience to listen to the actual performance. The metal wires emit a sound with a light ring and contrasting strength when struck by keyboard hammers. 2. Combined with online and offline Chinese and foreign judges, AI participates in scoring and giving comments.
This competition was judged by well-known judges from Italy, Hungary, the United States, and Russia, as well as professors from the piano department of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music. Seven contestants, including Sergey Davchenko, the champion of the 2023 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition, participated in the finals. After the 105-minute performance, the nine judges entered the room to discuss the rankings. On the stage at this time, commentator Dong Rongcan commented on the competition, answered questions from the audience, and interacted (see picture).
Dong Rongcan emphasized that the participation of AI's high-tech technology highlights the fairness and impartiality of the competition. In addition, AI will be owned by people and serve piano art education as a tool to improve teachers' teaching quality, improve students' learning efficiency, shorten the cycle of practicing new pieces, and expand students' artistic horizons. However, the ultimate emotional expression of music is still people-oriented and cannot be replaced by any high technology.
With the conclusion of the first AI International Piano Competition, the invitation of the 4th Global Digital Trade Expo has been accepted, and the preparations for the 2nd AI International Piano Competition have been put on the agenda and will be launched soon.
