Regarding President Dong Rongcan

~A Message from the President~

work together

Let's create a better tomorrow

"In addressing the challenges facing current US-China relations, the significance of the US-China Cultural and Arts Exchange Association lies in enhancing mutual understanding between the two peoples and inspiring their desire for friendship through cultural and educational exchanges. To this end, our efforts and concrete actions should far exceed our verbal pronouncements."

Founded in 1992, the association has journeyed for over 30 years, much like an infant entering its thirties. Looking back, it has weathered storms and hardships, endured sweat and toil, and achieved success along the way. Let us embrace the challenges and tests of this new era, work together, and, through the friendship between the Chinese and American people, create a brighter tomorrow.

—A senior writer, social commentator, and critic from Shanghai, who has authored a large number of essay collections, interviews, and other works, published in China and the United States.

Dong Rongcan graduated from the Piano and Composition Departments of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He was selected as a composer for the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra based on his merits.

In 1985, he embarked on a challenging journey in the United States, crossing the ocean alone with only $40. After a transformative experience, he earned a Master of Music degree in Composition and a Doctor of Arts in Education; he won first prize twice in the Mark Brunswick Young Composers Competition in New York (1990, 1991); and he gave a solo concert at Carnegie Hall (1992) and a "Romantic Piano" concert at Carnegie Hall (2000).

Charity is his original aspiration. On the first anniversary of the 5.12 earthquake in 2009, he organized a concert of works by more than 100 people in the disaster area, earning him the title of "People's Musician"; the People's Daily (Overseas Edition) (June 2, 2009) featured him extensively: "Dong Rongcan - A Chinese American with a Chinese Heart". In 2005, he donated funds in his mother's name to establish the "Shanghai Pudong New Area Xiuying Nursing Home".

On December 1, 2015, World Red Ribbon Day, he fully funded the production of the musical "Love and Life," which was performed at the Shanghai Daning Theater for a charity event.

Over the years, Mr. Dong has led the US-China Cultural and Artistic Exchange Association to complete hundreds of projects, passionately promoting cultural exchange between the East and the West.

In the hustle and bustle of the world, he never forgot his original aspiration as an artist, composing more than 100 melodious and moving songs, which he self-funded to record into nine albums; he also composed and played hundreds of romantic and touching piano pieces. Only a musician with a kind and honest heart could write such pure and beautiful songs.
